My Message To (New) Mamas

Dear Beautiful Mama,

I want you to know that you are loved. Loved no matter what you choose. Or how your baby behaves. No two people are the same.

Trust your intuition. You know your child best. Connect with your child. Your baby has chosen you and only you to be his mother. Remember to be kind to yourself.

Know that there are a million and one ways to parent. There is no right or wrong way. What matters in the end, is how engaged you are. And honouring what is important to you and your family. Aligning your values with your choices. You will find your way.

Put the books down. Hold your baby. Take some time for yourself. You are now on one of the biggest rides of your life. A spiritual journey full of ups and downs. Uniquely yours. And ever-changing and evolving.

Sleep. Journal. Savour this moment.

Love, from one Mama to another xo

P.S. I must add to give you some context that when my first was born,  my husband had literally just finished 5 weeks of radiation. As I was caring and getting to know our newborn daughter, I was changing bed sheets because the burns under his arms were so bad. At just 3 weeks young, I had to bring our baby girl to chemo daycare.

How can a mother choose between caring for her newborn or being there for her husband’s cancer treatments? Sometimes you do what you have to do.

I’m telling you this because in those early days, even though I felt confident, I did have feelings of being a bad mom (forgetting to bring socks or extra diapers, hearing comments from people in the hospital that she was too young to be there)…and the truth is I am far from being a bad mom.

I was doing the best that I could. No one is perfect. And since than, I’ve learned what it means to be a strong and engaged mom- ask for help before it is needed, be real and love with wholeheartedly, let go of judgement and comparison.

I wish you all the best. And remember to reach out for support. This shows true courage.
